Life at times becomes overwhelming and challenging; it is a struggle to just get through the day. In our busy lives we each have different roles that make it hard to find a healthy balance. Often your own self-care and needs go unmet leaving you feeling lost and hopeless that you are unable to make the changes needed to find happiness. Feelings of anger, guilt, shame, fear, depression, and anxiety can be difficult to endure and seem to control your life. Individual counseling is always centered around you: your goals, the obstacles affecting your happiness, as well as your needs and hopes. If you notice a repetitive, negative patterns that are not allowing you to achieve the goals you set for yourself, let us guide you through this difficult stage and provide you with tools to gain clarity and cope with these intense feelings so that you may experience a healthy and more fulfilling life.
Most relationships start off with passion, love, and intimacy.
Over time, issues tend to emerge. We lose feelings of closeness. We criticize, argue, and get angry. At times, we experience infidelity and other breaches in trust. We begin to question the relationship and wonder if we can continue.
Some of the most common signs of an unhealthy relationship include:
Many of these issues are rooted in problematic, even destructive relational patterns. One person gets angry, and the other pulls away. One person tries to change or “fix” their partner, not realizing that they themselves need to adapt and grow. Needs go unmet, and the relationship becomes a source of stress rather than support.
Many relationships can heal.
If your relationship has become unhealthy or dysfunctional, couples’ therapy is the first line of treatment in a safe and welcoming environment.
When a family finds itself in conflict or struggling to connect, family members may start to withdraw or argue instead of effectively communicating to address issues. Family counseling supports families in managing conflict, improving communication, building healthy boundaries, and establishing fulfilling relationships. Your family can begin to heal broken relationships, stop arguments, and restore feelings of connection with one another. When healing and change begins, you and your family will start to feel heard, understood, loved, and united.
What to expect: When you come into Meridian Health for family counseling, the first session will be with the whole family together. However, after this we will often see the family in multiple configurations. This means that during any one session we might work with the whole family together, the parents alone, the children alone, one member individually, or various other configurations. Doing this allows our therapists to address the needs of all the unique relationships within the family structure and identify the best approach to support your family in creating lasting change.

Addiction: is a chronic, often relapsing brain disease that causes compulsive drug seeking and use, despite harmful consequences to the addicted individual and to those around them. The difference between addiction and abuse is that in addiction the individual will experience withdrawal symptoms. Withdrawal symptoms can be very unpleasant and range depending on the substance that is being used, therefore substance use can often accelerate as the individual attempts to get rid of unwanted withdrawal symptoms. Here's an example of the range of withdrawal symptoms a person can experience: anxiety, depression, shakes, panic attacks, insomnia, sexual dysfunction, loss of appetite. You can really get the sense from this list that the breadth of different withdrawal symptoms a person can have can vary widely.
Sex Addiction: Currently sex addiction is categorized as an impulse control disorder and a sexual disorder, but the range of symptoms that are experienced by the individual are very much the same as those seen in substance dependence and abuse, and therefore the treatment of sex addiction is very similar to the treatment of substances.
A wide range of behaviors can be symptoms of sex addiction, including:
